NATURAL SOUL
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
VISUAL: A narrow, keen-eyed woman standing at 5'6", seen most often in a wheeled chair or using a silver-headed walking stick to get around. Her hair is long and black, shaved on her left side. She tends to move deliberately to avoid bringing attention to her attenuated physical condition. Lilias dresses expensively in dark and often monochrome shades, with jewellery adorning her fingers and her ears. She usually wears a high collar and full-length sleeves, even in warm weather.
FEATURES: Gold eyes with W-shaped pupils, and hair like long, inky tentacles. Beneath her clothes are a scar from an old bite wound on her left leg, and extensive tattoos covering much of her body, forming a complex magical contract.
AURAL: Her speaking voice is cool, smooth, and medium-pitched. She enunciates well and projects like someone used to commanding attention.
OLFACTORY: Clean laundry, perfume, and magic. She also may smell of pipe-smoke or liquor.
DEMEANOUR: Confident and direct. She heads straight for what she wants and speaks as though she's used to having her demands fulfilled without question, although she's not particularly charming or persuasive. On a good day, she is inquisitive and even playful. When irritated, she goes from cool straight to frosty.

ABILITIES
FAMILIAR
Lilias's familiar, Belzath, did not arrive with her. Since her familiar acts as the library from which she prepares her daily spells, she cannot prepare or cast any spells until she bonds with another familiar.
SPELLCASTING
Lilias is an arcane spellcaster with no particular specialty. She has a modest repertoire of spells, most of which have general utility or are used for protection. A full list of her spells and abilities is noted in the Expanded Abilities comment at the bottom of this journal entry.
HEXES
Lilias knows a few different hexes that she can use to her enemies' disadvantage. She can put a creature temporarily to sleep, or curse them with bad luck for a short time. She can mirror hostile effects targeting her so they also affect another creature. She can also fly or levitate for short periods, or simply slow her falling speed.
MAGIC ITEM CREATION
In addition to casting spells directly, Lilias can imbue magic into objects in order to create magic tools or clothing. Creating magic items is much more costly and time-consuming than spellcasting, which limits the number of these projects she can undertake in any given time period.
ALCHEMY
Lilias's knowledge of herbalism and alchemy allow her to identify various substances and poisons, though she is not generally in the habit of concocting anything more exciting than medicinal teas.
BACKGROUND

Over the following years, they found some success and attracted the attention of a rival noble house. After increasing pressure to sell their business, their winery mysteriously burnt down with Basil inside. Months later, after struggling to uncover the truth of the incident and pick up the pieces of her life, Lilias left to become a travelling swordswoman in a last-ditch effort to save her debt-laden family from bankruptcy.
About a year into her travels, her adventuring group suffered misfortune in an ancient ruin, and Lilias emerged as the sole survivor, now bearing a crippling leg injury and strange magical tattoos—an agreement with an otherworldly shadow patron, binding her to it in exchange for magic power. She applied herself as a fledgling magic user to continue her quest, and over the past few months she has been working in Sandpoint with a new group of adventurers, tackling troubles that are beyond the abilities of the town guard.

Expanded Abilities
FAMILIAR:
Lilias's familiar, Culcaanith, acts as her conduit to her magical patron, storing inside him the knowledge of all the spells Lilias can cast, like a small library. As long as he and Lilias are within 1 mile of each other, they can sense each other and share emotions through their bond.
Culcaanith acts as Lilias's valet by assisting her with both everyday tasks and magic-related endeavours. He is a capable item-crafting assistant, allowing her to create magic items more efficiently. If Lilias and Culcaanith are in contact when she casts a spell that requires her to touch her target, Culcaanith can touch the target to "deliver" the spell.
Culcaanith can also freely use a couple of spell-like abilities, though doing so does not require him to gesture or speak:
• Prestidigitation—Allows him to perform minor magical tasks, such as levitating, colouring, cleaning, soiling, chilling, warming, or flavouring small amounts of material. The spell can also create small objects, though they are always crude and fragile, and therefore useless as weapons or tools. All effects of the spell, beyond simply cleaning, soiling, or moving something, last only 1 hour.
• Open/Close—Opens or closes an unlocked door, window, or reasonably-sized object.
If she needs to replace her familiar, she can do so using an appropriate amount of expensive reagents and an eight-hour ritual, in order to bond with a new creature.
SPELLS:
Lilias chooses which spells to prepare at the beginning of each day by communing with her familiar. Unless otherwise stated, casting any spell on this list requires her to speak aloud (verbal component) and gesture with at least one free hand (somatic component). Some spells also require her to have a certain item or substance on hand (material component or focus).
cantrips:
Simple spells that are not magically taxing to cast. They can be cast several times each before exhausting the spell, although Lilias can only use four different cantrips on any given day.
• Arcane Mark—Inscribes Lilias's personal mark on a touched surface, either invisibly or softly glowing. For objects, lasts until dispelled; when placed on a creature, it fades after about a month.
• Dancing Lights—Creates a glowing silhouette or spheres which can be moved around freely. Lasts about a minute.
• Detect Magic—Detects spells and magic items within 60 feet, for up to 6 minutes per cast.
• Detect Poison—Detects poison in one creature, object, or 5-foot area within 40 feet.
• Light—Touched object shines like a torch for 60 minutes. Requires only a verbal component and a material component (a firefly).
• Mending—Repairs a small object that has been damaged or even destroyed, but cannot recreate missing pieces.
• Message—Facilitates whispered conversations over a distance of up to 160 feet. Requires a focus (a piece of copper wire).
• Stabilize—Causes a dying creature within 40 feet to become stable.
level 1 spells:
Lilias can cast up to five level 1 spells per day, which she can prepare from the following list:
• Brightest Night—Grants up to three creatures improved low-light vision for 6 hours.
• Cure Light Wounds—Heals a touched living creature or harms touched undead by a small amount.
• Enlarge Person—Makes one person within 40 feet about twice their original size in all dimensions (to a maximum of 10 feet), for up to 6 minutes. Requires a material component (a pinch of powdered iron).
• Mage Armour—Surrounds a touched creature with an invisible field of force, protecting them as though they were wearing armour, but without the weight or bulk. Lasts for 6 hours. Requires a focus (a piece of cured leather).
• Mount—Summons a saddled horse or pony which can be used as a willing steed for up to 12 hours. The mount disappears when the spell ends, or when it is "killed." Requires a material component (a bit of horse hair).
• Obscuring Mist—Creates a cloud of thick fog around Lilias's current position, spreading 20 feet in all directions. Lasts up to 6 minutes.
• Reduce Person—Makes one person within 40 feet about half their original size in all dimensions, for up to 6 minutes. Requires a material component (a pinch of powdered iron).
• Silent Image—Creates a visual illusion of a creature, object, or force within 640 feet. The illusion disappears when Lilias stops concentrating on the spell. The illusion cannot be felt, heard, or smelled. Requires a focus (a bit of fleece).
• Unseen Servant—Creates an invisible, shapeless force that can complete simple tasks when ordered. Lasts for 6 hours. Requires a material component (a piece of string and a bit of wood).
level 2 spells:
Lilias can cast up to four level 2 spells per day, which she can prepare from the following list:
• Blindness/Deafness—Causes a creature within 160 feet to become either blind or deaf. Lasts until dispelled. Requires only a verbal component.
• Darkness—Creates an area of darkness with a radius of 20 feet. Lasts up to 6 minutes. Requires a material component (bat fur and a piece of coal).
• Hold Person—Causes a person within 160 feet to become paralyzed and freeze in place. Lasts less than a minute. Requires a focus (a small, straight piece of iron).
• Vomit Swarm—This spell conjures a big swarm of spiders to attack enemies, with Lilias as the origin. The spiders vanish after less than a minute. Requires only a somatic component.
• Web—Conjures a large, sticky spiderweb filling a 20-foot-radius area. Lasts up to 60 minutes, unless destroyed earlier (such as by fire). Requires a material component (a spider web).
level 3 spells:
Lilias can cast up to three level 3 spells per day, which she can prepare from the following list:
• Deeper Darkness—Creates an area of deep darkness with a radius of 60 feet. If the surrounding light is dim or darker, the area is supernaturally dark (creatures who can see in darkness cannot see in it). Lasts up to 60 minutes. Requires a material component (bat fur and a piece of coal).
• Lightning Bolt—Discharges a 120-foot line of lightning from Lilias's hand, harming creatures and objects in its path. Requires a material component (fur and a glass rod).
• Remove Curse—Removes curses from a touched creature or object.
• Shroud of Innocuity—Makes Lilias and up to three other creatures appear to viewers as an ordinary member of the viewers' own race for 6 hours.
• Sleet Storm—Conjures a 40-foot-radius, 20-foot-high cylinder of intense sleet that blocks vision and makes the ground slippery. Lasts less than a minute. Requires a material component (dust and water).
HEXES:
Hexes are slightly different from spells in that Lilias doesn't need to prepare specific hexes at the beginning of each day, and she doesn't need to speak or gesture to activate them.
• Cackle—Extends the duration of Evil Eye and Misfortune hexes for creatures within 30 feet.
• Evil Eye—Causes doubt to briefly creep into the mind of a creature, hampering their ability to either attack, perform skilled actions, evade attacks, or resist effects (such as magic).
• Flight—Magic makes her body lighter, allowing her to stay afloat in water and slow her speed when falling for up to an hour each day. She can also levitate or fly for up to 6 minutes each.
• Gift of Consumption—When Lilias is subject to an effect that targets her vitality, curses a creature within 30 feet to suffer that effect as well. A creature can only be successfully affected by this hex once per day.
• Misfortune—Strikes a creature with bad luck for a few moments, making them more likely to mess up anything they attempt to do. What specific effect this has on other characters is up to player discretion. A creature can only be successfully affected by this hex once per day.
• Slumber—Puts a creature into a deep sleep for a short time. The magic is in effect for less than a minute, after which time they can wake normally. A creature can only be successfully affected by this hex once per day.
MAGIC ITEM CREATION:
Lilias is able to imbue her magic into physical objects in order to make magic items. Most of these items have small effects that work constantly (such as a cloak that makes you slightly more resistant to magic, or an amulet that makes your body more resistant to weapon damage). She can also make items that can "cast" spells she knows (such as a pipe that can summon an Unseen Servant when smoked). The items can be wearable, or be things like magic bags, cups that never spill, or figurines that move on their own. Magic items can have limited uses, either total or per day, or the magic can always be in effect (such as a magic bag that's permanently bigger inside).
Magic items require a significant amount of both time and expensive materials to create, requiring more of both the more advanced the effects of the item are. For example, an item that casts a single spell when used and then breaks would be easier and cheaper to make than an item that can cast a spell over and over before needing to be recharged. She cannot enchant weapons or armour.
